This chicken alfredo pasta bake is a cozy meal that brings a twist to a classic favorite. It’s creamy, cheesy, and you’ll love how satisfying it is to dig into a warm bowl of this deliciousness.

This recipe prevents overcooked pasta, simplifies sauce preparation, and boosts flavor with ample seasonings and cheese for a satisfying meal.

Cheesy Chicken Alfredo Bake - 1

Sometimes, I struggle with baked dishes that can turn out dry or overcooked. But this recipe is a game changer. It not only prepares pasta just right but also keeps the flavor packed with lots of cheese and a simple homemade sauce.

It only takes 20 minutes to prep, and then it cooks in 30 minutes. So, in less than an hour, you can have a comforting dish ready to serve. Plus, it’s easy to tweak with your favorite veggies or proteins.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Creamy Texture , The irresistible creaminess from the homemade Alfredo sauce coats every piece of pasta, making each bite comforting and satisfying.
  • Rich Flavor , With savory chicken and a blend of cheeses, this dish is packed with flavor that stands out and keeps you coming back for more.
  • Convenient Prep , This dish comes together quickly, allowing you to whip up a delicious meal in just about 50 minutes, making weeknight dinners a breeze.
  • Easy Storage , You can make it ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to three days, making planning meals a lot simpler.

Ingredient Notes

Cheesy Chicken Alfredo Bake - 2
  • Penne pasta: This shape holds the sauce really well, with those little ridges capturing every bit. You could swap it for rigatoni if you’re feeling adventurous!
  • Diced cooked chicken: Any cooked chicken works great here, so use leftover rotisserie or whatever’s in your fridge. It adds heartiness to the dish!
  • Butter: I like to use a good amount of butter for richness. Go for unsalted, you can control the salt better this way and keep it creamy.
  • Grated parmesan cheese: This cheese brings that salty, nutty flavor we all love. Freshly grated is best for melting, but pre-grated can work in a pinch.
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese: You want that gooey stretchiness! Buy block mozzarella and shred it yourself if you can, it’s worth the extra effort for nicer melting.

Recipe Tips

  • If your Alfredo sauce becomes too thick, a splash of reserved pasta water can help loosen it back to a creamy consistency.
  • When cheese doesn’t melt smoothly, freshly grated cheese performs better than pre-shredded, leaving you with that delightful creaminess.
  • If your pasta seems to dry out while baking, covering it with foil for part of the time can help retain moisture.
  • For a well-balanced flavor, a pinch of your favorite seasonings can elevate the dish without overwhelming the taste.
  • If overcooked pasta has been a problem in the past, aim for al dente cooking to prevent mushiness in your bake.

Serving Suggestions

  1. This chicken alfredo bake pairs well with a fresh side salad or with crispy garlic bread. You can serve it as a comforting meal any day of the week or for a family gathering.
  2. This dish works well in other recipes such as chicken alfredo pasta or chicken alfredo stuffed peppers. Consider using the leftovers creatively in wraps or as a pizza topping.
  3. Add a sprinkle of fresh herbs like parsley or basil right before serving to enhance the dish. A drizzle of olive oil can also add depth and freshness to each serving.

Storage Guidelines

  • To keep your chicken alfredo bake fresh, follow these storage tips:
  • Refrigeration: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freezing: Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, place in a freezer bag, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge.

Recipe Variations

  • You can use rotini or farfalle instead of penne pasta for a different shape and texture in your bake.
  • Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian herbs for extra flavor in the cheese sauce.
  • Either include cooked shrimp for a seafood twist, or mix in sautéed spinach or mushrooms for added health benefits.
  • If you want to make a larger batch, increase the pasta to 16 ounces, chicken to 4 cups, and cheeses to 1 cup each.

Course: Main Dish

Equipment

  • 3 quart baking dish
  • Large pan
  • Whisk
  • Large Bowl

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces penne pasta cooked in salted water according to package directions
  • 3 cups diced cooked chicken
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ¾ cup grated parmesan cheese reserved some for later use
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese divided use
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • cooking spray
  • 1 tablespoon parsley chopped

Instructions

  • Start by melting the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until it is bubbly and fragrant. Add the minced garlic and cook until it becomes fragrant but not browned, about 1 minute. Sprinkle in the flour, whisking until smooth to create a roux, which provides thickness to your sauce. Be cautious not to let it brown.
  • Slowly pour in the whole milk and heavy cream while continuously stirring. Keep whisking until the sauce begins to thicken and coats the back of a spoon, approximately 3-5 minutes. Lumps can ruin your sauce, so this step requires patience.
  • Stir in the grated parmesan cheese, reserving some for later use, along with a sprinkle of salt and pepper to taste. Keep stirring until the cheese melts and everything is well combined. If your sauce becomes too thick, a splash of reserved pasta water can help smooth it out.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cooked penne pasta and diced chicken with the creamy sauce, tossing until well-coated. This should be a satisfying process, but it does not need to be perfect; it will blend together beautifully while baking.
  • Spray the baking dish with cooking spray, then pour the pasta mixture into it, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top, ensuring even coverage but avoiding overdoing it, as too much cheese can lead to greasiness.
  • Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake until the top is golden brown and bubbly, about 30 minutes. The dish is ready when the top looks crispy and delicious.
  • After removing the bake from the oven, let it rest for a few minutes. Sprinkle the freshly chopped parsley on top for added color and flavor. This small touch makes a significant difference in appearance.

Notes

Store the pasta bake in advance and refrigerate for up to three days. If your Alfredo sauce becomes too thick, a splash of reserved pasta water can help restore a creamy consistency. Use freshly grated cheese instead of pre-shredded for optimal creaminess, and cover with foil if the pasta appears to dry out during baking. Aim for al dente cooking to prevent mushiness in your bake.
